Designing Infrastructure for Continuity
Continuity depends on redundancy, maintenance and restraint far more than on any single technology.
Infrastructure designed for continuity is defined by what it does not depend on. Every external dependency introduced is a condition on performance.
Energy generation and storage, water treatment, air handling, communications and waste management are considered as an interacting system, with independent margins for each. Maintenance access is designed in from the beginning, because a system that cannot be serviced is a system that eventually fails.
The realistic ambition is defined duration under defined conditions, not permanence.
